Bobbie O’Steen is a New York-based writer and film historian, dedicated to sharing the editor’s invisible art. Educated at Stanford University and an Emmy-nominated editor, she is the author of three acclaimed books. Cut to the Chase is based on interviews with her late husband and colleague, legendary editor Sam O’Steen about his work on such films as The Graduate and Chinatown. The Invisible Cut deconstructs the editing process as well as classic movie scenes in a cut-by-cut analysis. Making the Cut at Pixar, co-authored by Bill Kinder, is the first book written about the animation editor and their pioneering role at every stage of production. A media-rich companion website also offers nearly 90 minutes of video segments showing works-in-progress from inside Pixar’s vault. She hosts an ongoing live event series, “Inside the Cutting Room,” where she has interviewed over eighty editors. She will soon be moderating a new series for ACE called “Edited by Women,” focusing on women editors’ pivotal contributions to different eras in cinema history, starting with Hollywood’s Golden Age. Bobbie has taught at the American Film Institute, Emerson College, John Hopkins University, The New School, and NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. She also provides commentary and discussion for The Criterion Collection releases of such iconic films as A Hard Day’s Night and Don’t Look Now and has written for numerous publications, including CinemaEditor Magazine, which named her “Film Editing’s Greatest Champion.”
